2020 – A Time for New Beginnings

Writer's picture: Kristi Saare DuarteKristi Saare Duarte

Isn't it interesting that this pandemic happened in the year 2020, as a joke by the Universe to say, “Ha! You thought you had 2020 vision, but guess what? You don’t.”

For the last couple of years, I have felt the need for a restart button. And here here it is!

Some of my “spiritual” friends have expressed their concerns for the media or the government or some hidden entity manipulating us to believe there’s a dangerous virus, while they believe it has all been blow out of proportion.

What they fail to see is the divine message: the world we live in needs healing. It’s as if Mother Earth threw up her hands and said: enough is enough. I brought you famine, drought, superstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, and wildfires. You didn’t listen. What choice did I have but to bring a virus that affects the entire planet at the same time. It’s slow and deliberate. It moves quickly from one place t another, and it’s devious enough to make you think it doesn’t exist. And then it hits you.

It’s as if Mother Earth threw up her hands and said: enough is enough. I brought you famine, drought, superstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, and wildfires. You didn’t listen. .”

In New York City, we never had the opportunity to hide our heads in the sand and pretend that this virus didn’t exist. The constant sirens from passing ambulances in March and April made sure of that. We all know people who died from it, and we all know people who suffered in ICUs. We can’t pretend this is a bad flu year, when twice as many people died in the first months as in an entire flu season when no social distancing was observed.

In the end, it doesn’t matter if you believe in the virus or not. It doesn’t matter if it was created by evil scientists in China or a pharmaceutical company in the USA. It doesn’t matter if the news channels stir up hysteria about the risks of the virus – or the fear of wearing masks. It doesn’t even matter whether the numbers were inflated – or underreported.

We have all been given this opportunity to stop and think. What matters in our lives? Who matters? Are we willing to slave away in a dead end job just to be able to pay the rent and have health insurance? Does it matter if we have millions in our bank account, or just enough? What steps can we take to do better in terms of the environment.

Be an observer in this unique time in history. Watch the nature come back to life. And if the virus hasn’t affected you or anyone you love, be grateful that you are safe and have compassion with those who are not.

Lead with compassion. Get outside your own selfishness, even if you feel (or know) that you have nothing to fear.

This virus in not a hoax. It’s not a plot by evil manipulators. It’s a (sometimes painful) gift from the Universe and a golden opportunity for new beginnings. Wear a mask when needed in respect for others, don’t laugh it off because YOU are not afraid.

Be kind to one another!
